Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for the body, especially for the brain and nervous system. Carbohydrates are classified into starch, sugar and dietary fibre. The majority of carbohydrate should come from high-fibre and starchy carbohydrate foods such as bread, pasta, rice, vegetables, fruit, cereals and legumes. Sugary carbohydrate foods such as confectionary, soft drinks and heavily processed snacks should be limited.
