Saturated Fat %DI

Saturated fats are found primarily in animal-derived foods such as meat and dairy products, and in the plant foods coconut oil and palm oil. Saturated fats are solid at room temperature and are frequently used in take-away and snack foods such as deep fried foods, biscuits, pastries and potato crisps.

High levels of saturated fat in the diet have been linked with high blood cholesterol, increased risk of heart disease and some cancers, so intake should be restricted. It is recommended that no more than 10% of energy should come from saturated fat. Based on an energy intake of 8700kJ, this equates to 24g, which is part of the 70g of total fat, not in addition to it.
