Protein is used by the body for cell maintenance, growth and repair. It plays a vital role in practically all functions within the body and is especially important for maintenance of muscles, nerves, and the immune system. It is also a source of energy.
Foods that are good sources of protein include meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products, beans and lentils, soy products, seeds, nuts and grains (particularly wheat).
The daily intake for protein is 50g. Most Australians eat far more protein than they actually need, so deficiencies are rare.
