Omega-3 Supplements vs Fish

Are Omega-3 supplements just as good as eating omega-3 food sources such as fish?

The benefits of eating whole foods such as fish to obtain omega -3 fatty acids significantly outweigh the benefits of consuming a supplement. Whole foods provide a complex combination of vitamins and minerals your body needs for good health, not just the one. For example fish not only provides omega-3 fatty acids, it also provides protein, Vitamin A, D & E, B-vitamins and iodine, just to name a few. An Omega-3 supplement lacks these other nutrients.

Omega-3 supplements can also be quite costly compared with foods sources such as canned salmon, sardines and tuna. However if you cannot guarantee that you will be able to eat the recommended amount of Omega-3, supplements may be an appropriate alternative for you, so that you don’t miss out on the health benefits of Omega-3.
