Fish species that are members of the salmon family include Atlantic and Pacific salmon and trout. Salmon are born in fresh water, but migrate to the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to mature and grow. They return to the fresh waters where they were born when they are ready to reproduce.

Salmon range in colour from pink to red, and their flavour can vary from mild to rich depending on origin.

Being an oily fish, salmon is a rich in omega 3. Salmon also contains protein, vitamin D, niacin and B-complex vitamins. Canned salmon provides calcium when the small, edible bones are consumed.
Cooking tips
Salmon is versatile and can be cooked by frying, poaching, baking, searing or grilling
Enjoy Japanese-style salmon, eaten raw as sushi or sashimi
For a snack, try canned plain or smoked salmon on rice cakes with reduced-fat cream cheese, capers and cracked pepper
Add canned salmon to salads and sandwiches
